Study points to link between schizophrenia and vascular alterations in the brain
Publicado em 19 janeiro 2023
A study conducted in Brazil and reported in an article published in Molecular Psychiatry suggests that schizophrenia may be associated with alterations in the vascularization of certain brain regions. Researchers at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), D’Or Research and Education Institute (IDOR) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) found a link between astrocytes (central nervous system cells) from patients with schizophrenia and formation of narrow blood [...]

Omicron has mutations detected in previous variants, which explains vaccine effectiveness, scientists say
Publicado em 08 fevereiro 2022Omicron emerged as a variant of concern only in November 2021, but all the mutations it contains except one had been described before that. Researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil, supported by FAPESP, attribute this factor to the effectiveness of the existing vaccines against the variant, reflected in the relatively small number of severe cases and deaths despite Omicron’s heightened transmissibility. The hypothesis is raised in an article by [...]ver notícia -
Non-invasive sensor shows correlation between blood pressure and intracranial pressure
Publicado em 08 junho 2021Brazilian researchers have simultaneously demonstrated the mechanism linking high blood pressure to elevated intracranial pressure, validated a non-invasive intracranial pressure monitoring method, and proposed a treatment for high blood pressure that does not affect intracranial hypertension. The study was supported by FAPESP and involved collaboration between researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) and Brain4care, a startup based in São Carlos. It could result in [...]ver notícia -
Red propolis could be used to treat schistosomiasis
Publicado em 07 dezembro 2020Well-known for its bactericidal and anti-fungal properties, Brazilian red propolis has now been found to act powerfully against the parasite that causes schistosomiasis, reducing the number of eggs and killing the helminths (worms). In experiments performed at Universidade Guarulhos (UnG) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with FAPESP’s support, 400 milligrams per kilogram of body weight was a sufficient dose of red propolis to reduce the parasite load by more than 60% in mice [...]ver notícia
