The results were published in an article in the journal EClinicalMedicine, of the Lancet group. The researchers performed an autopsy on five children who died as a result of the virus in São Paulo, they were a boy and four girls, aged between 7 months and 15 years.
"It is important that pediatricians pay attention to these possible clinical manifestations other than covid-19 in children and adolescents so that the infection is diagnosed and SIM-P is treated more quickly," said researcher Marisa Dolhnikoff, professor USP and FAPESP. project coordinator.
The findings of the study show that the manifestations of SIM-P are triggered by the direct action of covid in the cells of Organs infected organs. In addition, SIM-P in children can happen a few days or weeks after infection.
“We are not saying that what has been described so far about pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome is wrong, but we add the finding that the tissue damage caused by the virus itself is related and, most likely, is an important component for inducing this response. inflammatory inflammation in children, ”said Dolhnikoff.
