Coronavirus can stay in sperm for up to 110 days after infection (59 notícias)

A study published in the journal Andrology claims that the coronavirus can remain in human sperm for up to 110 days after infection.

Researchers from the University of São Paulo in Brazil suggest that men trying to conceive should consider a quarantine period. The scientists explain that the virus can reduce semen quality.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that a study has shown that Sars-CoV-2 can invade and destroy different human cells and tissues, including those of the reproductive system. But this is the first time that scientists have confirmed the presence of the virus for so long.

To reach this conclusion, the scientists analyzed semen samples from 13 men aged between 21 and 50 who were treated at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine and diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe Covid-19.

"We found that sperm produce 'extracellular traps' based on nuclear DNA, that is, the genetic material contained in the nucleus decondenses, the sperm cell membranes rupture and the DNA is expelled extracellularly, forming networks similar to those previously described in the systemic inflammatory response to Sars-CoV-2", says Professor Jorge Hallak, coordinator of the study, to the Fapesp agency.

What to do if you have symptoms of Covid-19:

Stay calm and avoid going to the hospital. Stay home and call SNS 24 (808 24 24 24). Choose option 1 (for other symptoms choose option 2) or 112 if it is a medical emergency. Follow all instructions given and avoid being close to people, keeping a distance of at least two meters.
