Between 1990 and 2019, heatwaves were responsible for 153,078 deaths per year, the equivalent of 236 deaths per ten million inhabitants, or around 1% of deaths worldwide.
Most deaths have occurred in Asia, but Europe proportionally has the highest mortality rates with 655 deaths per ten million people. Nationally, Greece, Malta and Italy had the highest number of heat-related deaths.
Overall, regions with dry climates and lower average incomes had the most heatwave-related deaths, the researchers point out.
