Edible, biodegradable, anti-microbial plastic boasts higher tensile strength than petroleum-based plastic
Publicado em 11 março 2022
Disposal of food packaging is a major cause of environmental pollution worldwide. More than 350 million metric tons of plastic are produced every year, and 85% of the garbage dumped in the oceans is plastic, according to estimates. Brazil is the fourth-largest producer, accounting for some 11 million metric tons per year. To make matters worse, most plastic packaging is derived from non-renewables such as petroleum.
Given all these drawbacks, reducing the use of fossil fuels to produce [...]

Scientists use “green” solvent and natural pigment to produce bioplastic
Publicado em 01 março 2022Scientists based in Brazil and Portugal have developed an environmentally sustainable process to produce biodegradable plastic using pigment extracted from yeast by “green” solvents. In an article published in the journal Green Chemistry, they show that this biodegradable plastic could in future be used in smart packaging with antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. With similar applications to those of conventional plastics derived from oil, gas and coal, [...]ver notícia -

A combination of agrochemicals shortens the life of bees
Publicado em 03 junho 2019A nonlethal dose of insecticide clothianidin can reduce honeybees' life span by half A nonlethal dose of insecticide clothianidin can reduce honeybees' life span by half; once combined with the fungicide pyraclostrobin, it alters the behavior of worker bees to the point of endangering the whole colony. A new study by Brazilian biologists suggests that the effect of pesticides on bees could be worse than previously thought. Even when used at a level considered nonlethal, an insecticide [...]ver notícia -
Artificial magnetic field produces exotic behavior in graphene sheets
Publicado em 04 dezembro 2018A simple sheet of graphene has noteworthy properties due to a quantum phenomenon in its electron structure named Dirac cones in honor of British theoretical physicist Paul Dirac (1902-1984), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933. The system becomes even more interesting if it comprises two superimposed graphene sheets, and one is very slightly turned in its own plane so that the holes in the two carbon lattices no longer completely coincide. For specific angles of twist, the [...]ver notícia -
Key enzyme for production of second-generation ethanol discovered in Brazilian Amazon
Publicado em 17 maio 2018The enzyme discovered by the group enables the release of carbohydrates resulting from saccharification and their fermentation by yeast to occur at the same time. Second-generation ethanol (also called cellulosic ethanol) open perspectives for optimizing alcohol production. Since 2G ethanol is obtained from from sugarcane straw and bagasse, it basically makes it possible converting waste into energy. Holder of the world's best biomass and boasting the installed industrial capacity, the [...]ver notícia -
Thermoelectric nanodevice based on Majorana fermions proposed
Publicado em 10 abril 2018In March 1938, the young Italian physicist Ettore Majorana disappeared mysteriously, leaving his country's scientific community shaken. The episode remains unexplained, despite Leonardo Scascia's attempt to unravel the enigma in his book The Disappearance of Majorana (1975). Majorana, whom Enrico Fermi called a genius of Isaac Newton's stature, vanished a year after making his main contribution to science. In 1937, when he was only 30, Majorana hypothesized a particle that is its own [...]ver notícia -
Model predicts scenarios for energy generation using nuclear fusion
Publicado em 31 janeiro 2018Nuclear fusion, for the controlled and regular generation of electric power by converting hydrogen into helium and reproducing on a small scale what happens in our Sun (as well as other stars), is one of the foremost technological promises for the decades ahead. Designed to reach parameters beyond the ones previously obtained in laboratory experiments, the reactor prototype called ITER - "the way" in Latin - is presently under construction in southern France. Its design capacity is for 500 [...]ver notícia -
Experiment confirms fundamental symmetry in nature
Publicado em 24 setembro 2015Scientists working with ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), a heavy-ion detector on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ring, have made precise measurements of particle mass and electric charge that confirm the existence of a fundamental symmetry in nature. The investigators include Brazilian researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) and the University of Campinas. The findings led the researchers to confirm a fundamental symmetry between the nuclei of the particles and [...]ver notícia
