Poor diet linked to 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes globally: Study
Publicado em 18 abril 2023
New Delhi, April 18 - Poor diet contributed to over 14.1 million cases of type 2 diabetes in 2018, representing over 70 per cent of new diagnoses globally, according to a study.
Of the 30 most populated countries studied, India, Nigeria, and Ethiopia had the fewest case of type 2 diabetes related to unhealthy eating, the researchers said.
The analysis, published in the journal Nature Medicine, looked at data from 1990 and 2018, providing valuable insight into which dietary factors are [...]

Despite differences, conservation challenges similar in Madagascar, Brazil
Publicado em 04 dezembro 2022Madagascar's nature is so unique that 82 per cent of its plant species and 90 per cent of its animals are endemic, found exclusively on the island off the coast of Southeast Africa. A population so impoverished that the country's human development index (HDI) is one of the lowest in the world and lives among this rare biodiversity, creating the problem of balancing conservation with economic and social growth. Two studies published in the journal Science by researchers affiliated [...]ver notícia -
New gadget identifies COVID-19 antibodies in five minutes
Publicado em 30 novembro 2022Rapid, low-cost, and accurate tests are still required for epidemiological surveillance and healthcare services to monitor and contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Brazilian researchers have contributed to this field’s efforts by creating an electrochemical immunosensor that identifies antibodies against the virus. The innovation is described in an article published in the journal ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering. In search of a novel diagnostic method, the group opted for a [...]ver notícia -
Gene that can naturally protect people against Covid-19 discovered
Publicado em 22 novembro 2022A team of Brazilian researchers has discovered that a gene can protect people, even those aged 90 and above, from the deadly Covid disease. Two research papers found that the frequency of variants of the gene 'MUC22' was twice as high in the mild Covid-19 group as in severe patients, and higher still in resilient super-agers. This gene belongs to the "mucin" family and is associated with the production of mucus, which lubricates and protects the airways. On the other [...]ver notícia -
Covid virus infection changes functioning of host cell RNA, say scientists
Publicado em 10 novembro 2022The findings pave the way to novel treatments for Covid-19 and repurposing of known drugs, the researchers noted For the first time, scientists have shown that infection by Covid virus changes the functioning of host cell RNA, providing clues as to how different variants can escape the immune system, and serve as a basis for the development of novel treatments. Researchers at Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil arrived at this conclusion by analyzing 13 datasets obtained [...]ver notícia -
Covid-19 can cause brain alterations, neurocognitive dysfunction: Study
Publicado em 12 agosto 2022A study shows how SARS-COV-2 infects brain cells called astrocytes, causing structural changes in the brain. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 can cause brain alterations and neurocognitive dysfunction, particularly in long COVID-19 syndrome, but the underlying mechanisms are elusive. Daniel Martins-de-Souza and colleagues used MRI to compare brain structure in 81 study participants recovering from a mild COVID-19 infection and 81 healthy individuals. The authors found that the former group [...]ver notícia -
Omicron's mutations explain why it is less severe among vaccinated

Covid may remain transmissible for longer than quarantine period: Study
Publicado em 31 janeiro 2022Some people infected with SARS-CoV-2 may be able to transmit the virus for longer than the recommended quarantine period, without necessarily manifesting any symptoms during the final stage of the infection, a study suggests. The research, published recently in the journal Frontiers in Medicine, involved 38 Brazilian patients who were followed on a weekly basis between April and November 2020. The researchers affiliated with the Pasteur-USP Scientific Platform, a partnership between [...]ver notícia -
Covid can remain active in some people for over 7 months: Study
Publicado em 28 janeiro 2022Sao Paulo, Jan 28 (IANS) A team of international researchers have found that the novel coronavirus can continue to be present in some human bodies upto 232 days. Researchers from France’s Pasteur Institute, the University of Sao Paulo (USP) and Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Brazil conducted a study involving 38 Brazilian patients. The patients were followed until they tested negative twice or three times consecutively by RT-PCR. Of the 38 cases tracked, two men and a woman [...]ver notícia -
Study finds SARS-CoV-2 may remain active for longer than quarantine period
Publicado em 28 janeiro 2022A new study has detected that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can infect a person for more than 200 days in an atypical case. The study has been published in the 'Frontiers in Medicine Journal'. The atypical case of infection by SARS-CoV-2 was part of a study involving 38 Brazilian patients followed on a weekly basis between April and November 2020 by researchers affiliated with the Pasteur-USP Scientific Platform, a partnership between France's Pasteur Institute, [...]ver notícia
