Study points to novel method of detecting complications caused by P. vivax in malaria patients
Publicado em 23 dezembro 2021
In an article published in the journal eLife, researchers at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, describe a novel strategy for detecting imbalances and complications in patients infected by Plasmodium vivax, one of the parasites that causes malaria and the main cause of the disease in the Americas.
According to the study, total parasite biomass in the patient is a better predictor of the extent of infection outside the bloodstream than parasitemia, [...]

#Scientists discover how forest fires influence rain cloud formation in the Amazon
Publicado em 27 outubro 2021A Brazilian study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment shows how wildfires and forest burning for agriculture influence rain cloud formation in the Amazon. According to the authors, aerosols (tiny solid particles and liquid droplets emitted into the atmosphere by fire) hinder the freezing of cloud droplets when the atmosphere is humidified, but can also promote freezing when the atmosphere is dry. This alters the natural functioning of clouds and their typical height, [...]ver notícia -

Older people with abdominal fat develop mobility problems
Publicado em 01 setembro 2021Sao Paulo [Brazil], September 1 (ANI): A new study has found that the dangerous combination of weak muscles and abdominal fat can lead to a significant loss of gait speed in older people. The findings of the study were published in the journal 'Age and Ageing'. The study was conducted by researchers at the Federal University of Sao Carlos (UFSCar) in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in partnership with colleagues at University College London (UCL) in the UK. A slower gait is a natural [...]ver notícia -
Tree falls during dry season in São Paulo City are due to poor management, study suggests
Publicado em 12 agosto 2021By Luciana Constantino | Agência FAPESP–Trees fall every day in São Paulo, Brazil, the largest and most populous city in Latin America, but most tree falls occur in the rainy season owing mainly to the effects of temperature, strong winds and heavy rain. When trees fall in the dry season, the main direct cause is not weather but a lack of management and adequate conditions for the survival of street vegetation. These are the key findings of a studypublishedby a group of [...]ver notícia -
Birds that disperse more types of seed have better evolutionary chances
Publicado em 11 agosto 2021More than 70% of plant species that produce flowers depend on birds to disperse their seeds. Birds feed on fruit from a wide array of different plants, and bird-plant interactions configure a welter of complex networks. A study conducted at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biosciences (IB-USP) in Brazil shows that the evolutionary stability of each bird species depends on the position it occupies in these networks, increasing in step with the number and centrality of its [...]ver notícia -
Biosensor permits ultra-fast and cheap detection of SARS-CoV-2
Publicado em 10 agosto 2021The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic have stimulated innovation on several fronts. One is the development of low-cost methods of clinical diagnosis. Genosensors are a case in point. Based on nucleic acids that detect simple complementary DNA or RNA sequences, genosensors are biosensors that make possible mass testing for immediate and sensitive testing of genetic material. A device of this kind, already shown to be efficient in detecting SARS-CoV-2, has just been produced in Brazil by [...]ver notícia -
Researchers propose a method of magnetizing a material without applying an external magnetic field
Publicado em 29 julho 2021Magnetizing a material without applying an external magnetic field is proposed by researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil, in an article published in the journal Scientific Reports, where they detail the experimental approach used to achieve this goal. The study was part of the Ph.D. research pursued by Lucas Squillante under the supervision of Mariano de Souza, a professor at UNESP’s Department of Physics in Rio Claro. Contributions were also made by Isys [...]ver notícia -
Study innovates in gluten-free formulations, creating more palatable and nutritious bread
Publicado em 21 julho 2021Gluten is a protein complex found in cereals such as wheat, rye and barley. It is responsible for the elastic texture of dough so that loaves and rolls can be baked into different shapes while remaining flexible and crusty. It also lengthens the shelf life of bread at room temperature, when associated with preservatives. Gluten intolerance, however, has become a global epidemic, and gluten-free products are increasingly popular. The problem is that most of those available on the market are far [...]ver notícia -
Study refutes suspicion that dengue increases risk of microcephaly associated with Zika
Publicado em 20 julho 2021A pregnant woman infected by Zika virus does not face a greater risk of giving birth to a baby with microcephaly if she has previously been exposed to dengue virus, according to a Brazilian study that compared data for pregnant women in Rio de Janeiro and Manaus. A Zika epidemic broke out in Brazil in 2015-16 in areas where dengue is endemic. Both viruses are transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Some of the states affected by the Zika epidemic reported a rise in cases of microcephaly, a [...]ver notícia
