Unsurprisingly, Fake News is a big problem on the internet. It is not always the simplest task to distinguish whether the content conveyed in a news item is real or not. To try to combat the problem, researchers from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of São Carlos of the University of São Paulo (USP) developed an algorithm with Ability to detect Fake News with 96% accuracy.
The tool is in the calibration phase and will receive new tests over the next few months. It will work across the domain www.fakenewsbr.com which despite being hosted is still not working for the public.
One of the project’s coordinators, statistician Francisco Louzada, says that the proposal is to objectively analyze the news through AI, “We combine several mathematical models that are able to identify whether a news item corresponds to the reality of the facts or not”. the a lgorithm analyzed more than 100,000 news stories published in the last five years. The results were then compared with the base of texts containing false or true information. Louzada says that the algorithm reached an accuracy of about 96% after analyzing more than 100,000 news items.
Update that will never end
The researchers say that the fakenewsbr platform will need to undergo constant updates and improvements, to follow the trend of adaptations of Fake News. According to the statistician, the platform uses syntax and grammar to identify patterns in false information. “The models analyzed over 100,000 texts to find patterns of vocabulary, sentence construction and syntax that are commonly used in Fake News.”
The researchers claim that the Algorithm accuracy will vary outside of a controlled research environment for this reason new updates will always be necessary to keep Fakenewsbr in a high standard of quality.
With the 2022 presidential election approaching, it will be interesting to see if the site fakenewsbr will be able to track and maintain its high accuracy, with the excessive influx of dubious news and information that will circulate during the election period.
