Brazilian scientists from Embraer's “Silent Aircraft” program, Micael Carmo and Fernando Catalano, were selected by the European Patent Office (EPO) as finalists for the European innovation award, the “European Inventor Award”, in recognition of their contributions to a sustainable aviation. The indication is for the category of countries outside Europe. This year's edition had more than 550 candidates and the winners will be announced on July 9th, in Malta. The two inventors respectively represent teams from Embraer and research centers, coordinated by the University of São Paulo (USP), who participated in studies of engineering solutions and methodologies for the development of quieter aircraft. New technologies contributed to reducing the noise of Embraer's new generation of commercial jets, the E2, by 65% and carbon emissions per passenger by up to 25%, when compared to the previous generation. Emissions reduction can reach up to an impressive 85% when fueled with 100% sustainable fuel (SAF).
Funded through a collaborative initiative between Embraer, Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP) and São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP), the “Silent Aircraft” program was led by the company together with other research centers from Brazil, England, Germany and the Netherlands, involving more than 200 researchers who generated several patents and important contributions to the development of more efficient aircraft.
“It is an immense honor for Embraer and the entire Brazilian scientific community to be represented by our engineer Micael Carmo and Professor Catalano, from the São Carlos School of Engineering – EESC-USP. We strongly believe that collaboration between companies and research centers can produce innovations to improve people's lives and this program is a great example of this”, said Henrique Langenegger, Chief Engineer at Embraer. “Congratulations to everyone who makes the Brazilian aeronautical industry globally respected for its efficiency and sustainability.”
As one of the most prestigious innovation awards, the European Inventor Award is organized by the EPO to recognize people and teams who have developed solutions to today's major challenges. The nomination highlights the contributions of the “Silent Aircraft” program to the development of Embraer's E2 jets, which are ideal for operations in places with noise restrictions, benefiting densely populated airport regions, airlines and positively impacting local communities.
The finalists are chosen by an independent jury made up of professionals already nominated for the award and who evaluate the contributions of research to scientific progress, social and sustainable development, and economic prosperity. All inventors must have patents registered in Europe.
