The discussions will focus on Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Energy and the Environment. The symposium is one of a series connecting leading scientists from the State of São Paulo, Brazil with colleagues from other countries. The 2014 event will take place in Germany for the first time, taking advantage of the regional partnership between the State of São Paulo and the Free State of Bavaria.

On the German side the host organisations are the Bavarian State Ministry of Education,
Science and the Arts (Stab), the Bavarian University Center for Latin America (BAYLAT) and the Detaches Museum (DM). The event will be opened with a keynote speech from Prof Dr. Peter Stroh Schneider, President of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

In addition, Prof Dr. Freda Schüth, vice-president of the Max Planck Society will give another address. In the environmental research field, Brazil has substantial operational ties with German institutions. For instance, Germany is helping to fund a major climate change project in the Amazon called GOAmazon. Senior figures from the following Fermany instititions will also be at the  FAPESP Weeks symposium: Fraunhofer Society, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The Brazilian sponsor is the São Paulo Research Foundation, (FAPESP), now Brazil’s most dynamic regional funding agency with a US$510 million annual budget, and fast-growing links with research councils, universities and research institutes around the world. Against a backdrop of uncertain funding from federal government, FAPESP’s budget rose 7% last year and has tripled over a decade.

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is a public foundation with the mission of supporting research in all fields of knowledge.

FAPESP is aware that the excellence in research requires working with the best scientists worldwide. To facilitate collaborations FAPESP has established partnerships with funding agencies, companies, higher education and research organizations in countries known for the quality of their research, and encourages scientists funded through its grants to further develop their international research collaboration.

The Bavarian University Center for Latin America (BAYLAT) is a state service organization that works Bavarian wide to promote the international network building between Bavarian and Latin-American universities. Besides that, BAYLAT is in charge of increasing the fame of Bavaria as a center of innovation, apprenticeship and science in Latin America. The objectives of BAYLAT are directly connected to the internationalization strategy of the higher education institutions of the Free State of Bavaria. To fulfil these objectives BAYLAT plans and implements its activities within the concept of science and higher education diplomacy.

Since 2011 FAPESP has organized scientific symposiums in Washington, Morgantown, Cambridge, Charlotte, Chapel Hill, Raleigh (USA), Toronto (Canada), Salamanca, Madrid (Spain), Tokyo (Japan), London (England) and Beijing (China).
