Brazilian tilapia farmer Fisher Piscicultura has designed circular tanks floating in water that can hold up to 100,000 tilapia fish, and increase efficiency, the firm says.
"Our floating circular tank design optimizes the production system. Most fish farmers have traditionally used square tanks. Also, in our system, a silo in the center holds 1,200 kilograms of feed and an automatic dispenser releases the right dose 48 times a day," said Helio de Souza Barbosa, a partner in the firm.
The firm, which is being supported by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation, is undertaking final testing on the Grande River, near the border between the southern Brazilian states of Sao Paulo State and Minas Gerais.
