Researchers develop 10-minute COVID-19 diagnostic test that wage workers can afford
Publicado em 03 fevereiro 2021
A test that detects antibodies to the novel coronavirus in 10 minutes and costs only a fifth of the market average has been developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo’s São Carlos Chemistry Institute (IQSC-USP) and Brazilian startup Biolinker, with São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP’s support.
The device works similarly to the rapid tests available now in pharmacies. It analyzes a drop of blood, and two red LEDs light up if it detects the [...]

Diabetes epidemic detected among Xavante indigenous community in Central Brazil
Publicado em 10 novembro 2020The Xavante, one of the indigenous communities most vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil, are suffering from an epidemic of diabetes, a “silent” disease considered a risk factor for severe COVID-19. A group of researchers affiliated with the Federal University of São Paulo’s Medical School (EPM-UNIFESP) and the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP-USP) examined the retinas of 157 individuals before the COVID-19 pandemic and [...]ver notícia -
Researchers validate rapid tests to detect dengue, Zika, yellow fever and other viruses
Publicado em 24 agosto 2020There are more than 70 species of flavivirus, and many cause diseases in humans and animals, including dengue, Zika and yellow fever viruses. A novel flavivirus identification test that is both fast and sensitive has been validated in Brazil by Mariana Sequetin Cunha and collaborators at the Adolfo Lutz Institute, a leading epidemiological surveillance laboratory that reports to the São Paulo state government. An article on the topic has been published in Archives of Virology. The [...]ver notícia -
Researchers discover hybrid fungus involved in lung infections
Publicado em 20 julho 2020Aspergillus latus, a species of fungus previously found only in soil or plants, has been found for the first time in a hospital environment by an international group of researchers. The group sequenced its genome and discovered that it is actually a hybrid and is up to three times more drug-resistant than the two species from which it derives. An article on the study is published in Current Biology and coauthored by researchers from Brazil, the United States, Portugal and Belgium. The research [...]ver notícia -
Autism Linked to Group of Dysregulated Synapse and Neurotransmitter Release Genes
Publicado em 18 maio 2020Researchers in Brazil have identified a group of co-expressed genes that are dysregulated in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neuronal cells from patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and which could potentially be used as a biomarker or even therapeutic target for the neurodevelopmental disorder. The study results, reported by scientists at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biosciences (IB-USP), indicate that a common gene expression profile my [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian and Indian scientists produce crystal with many potential applications
Publicado em 05 maio 2020Thanks to its magnetic properties, the material — zinc-doped manganese chromite — can be used in a range of products, from gas sensors to data storage devices Credit: Renan Ribeiro Spinels are oxides with chemical formulas of the type AB2O4, where A is a divalent metal cation (positive ion), B is a trivalent metal cation, and O is oxygen. Spinels are valued for their beauty, which derives from the molecules’ spatial configurations, but spinels in which the trivalent cation B [...]ver notícia -
A study investigating genetic mechanisms underlying resistance to leishmaniasis
Publicado em 25 março 2020In an article published in Scientific Reports, researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil describe experiments performed with mice that show how genetic factors can determine whether an individual is susceptible or resistant to leishmaniasis. According to the authors, the results will contribute to a better understanding of leishmaniasis in humans and help to clarify why only some of those individuals infected develop the disease. Leishmaniasis is caused by [...]ver notícia
