Harnessing an extremophile’s bioactive compound for industrial applications
Publicado em 22 de janeiro de 2025
A bioactive compound produced by an extremophilic bacterium has potential industrial applications.
An international collaboration of researchers has isolated a bioactive compound in extremophilic bacteria from a hot spring in the Andes. Harnessing this compound could be used to develop natural additives for the pharmaceutical and food industries, thanks to its advantageous physiochemical properties.
Extremophiles are bacteria that live and thrive in inhospitable environments, including [...]

Microorganisms lead the way in adapting to extreme environments
Publicado em 11 novembro 2021Researchers have profiled microorganisms that have adapted to living on photovoltaic panels and are set to explore how they could be utilized in the maintenance of the panels. The impacts of climate change are already being felt globally and, in addition to finding ways to minimize global warming, humans will need to adapt to hotter climates and more extreme weather, where it seems microorganisms are leading the way. Researchers, led by Juliane Moura (Federal University of São Carlos, [...]ver notícia -
SIFTER-T: A scalable and optimized framework for the SIFTER phylogenomic method of probabilistic protein domain annotation
Publicado emDepartment of Computing and Mathematics FFCLRP-USP, University of Sao Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil BioTechniques, Vol. 58, No. 3, March 2015, pp. 140–142 Full Text (PDF) Abstract Statistical Inference of Function Through Evolutionary Relationships (SIFTER) is a powerful computational platform for probabilistic protein domain annotation. Nevertheless, SIFTER is not widely used, likely due to usability and scalability issues. Here we present SIFTER-T (SIFTER Throughput-optimized), a [...]ver notícia
