Biotech breakthrough turns waste biomass into high value chemicals
Publicado em 03 de dezembro de 2019
A move towards a more sustainable bio-based economy has been given a new boost by researchers who have been able to simplify a process to transform waste materials into high value chemicals.
A collaboration between the UK and Brazil has shown that waste sugar cane and wheat straw from agricultural processes can be made directly into valuable chemicals with an increase in value of 5000-fold.
Unlike fossil fuels, biofuels are renewable. Rather than relying on crude oil, which is in finite [...]

Thyme essential oil in corn starch particles combats Aedes aegypti larvae
Publicado em 26 agosto 2019A system created in Brazil using cheap, biodegradable materials permits controlled release of larvicide and can be used in small amounts of water Corn starch, an abundant, cheap and biodegradable raw material, is the basis for a novel larvicide developed by researchers at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in São Paulo State, Brazil. The material is used in microcapsules for storage and controlled release of active compounds to kill larvae of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits [...]ver notícia -
Boeing to Expand Investment in Brazil’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Industry
Publicado em 26 junho 2019Boeing today announced a USD 1 million investment in Brazil’s efforts to establish a sustainable aviation fuel industry. The investment will focus on initiatives that maximize social, economic and environmental benefits to local communities engaged in the development of feedstock that can be used to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In 2018, the company provided an additional USD 1 million to the industry’s efforts in Brazil. “Brazil is a biofuel powerhouse and we [...]ver notícia -
Pioneering biologists create a new crop through genome editing
Publicado em 11 outubro 2018Crops such as wheat and maize have undergone a breeding process lasting thousands of years, in the course of which mankind has gradually modified the properties of the wild plants in order to adapt them to his needs. One motive was, and still is, higher yields. One “side effect” of this breeding has been a reduction in genetic diversity and the loss of useful properties. This is shown, among others, by an increased susceptibility to diseases, a lack of taste or a reduced vitamin and [...]ver notícia
