A giant exoplanet was discovered in a binary system that includes the extinguished star.
Brazilian scientists from the Federal University of Rio Grande-do-Norte has discovered a giant gas planet larger than Jupiter 13 times. This writes Naked-science.
The planet is located in a very old binary system where one of the stars have “died” and turned into a dim white dwarf.
To discover a celestial body, astronomers have tracked changes in the periods of rotation of a pair of stars system KIC 10544976 in the constellation of Cygnus. For this purpose they used data of ground-based observatories and the space telescope Kepler.
In the end we found out that the system includes two old stars – red and white dwarfs – orbiting a common center of mass. In the same system and the exoplanet is a giant that may have appeared already in the final stages of the evolution of the system.
“Maybe she came from the substances emitted one of the stars of the transformation into a white dwarf,” said one of the study’s authors.
Earlier it was reported, what was found was a planet with a storm on a planetary scale, clouds of iron and silicate.
