Study points to ways of involving visually impaired people in environmental disaster prevention
Publicado em 11 de maio de 2022
According to the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), almost half the world’s population—about 3.3 billion to 3.6 billion people—live in contexts that are highly vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Social inequality greatly increases this vulnerability.
To investigate the effects of inequality on environmental risk reduction and disaster prevention programs, researchers in Brazil affiliated with the Federal University of Mato Grosso [...]

Animals essential to seed dispersal are the first to disappear owing to deforestation
Publicado em 27 abril 2022Trees of the speciesPouteria bullata, which is endemic to Brazil and whose common name isguapeva-vermelha, are found solely in the Atlantic Rainforest biome and produce sweet succulent fruit. Their seeds are relatively large (about 2 cm) and cannot be swallowed by birds or small mammals, so they depend on primates like the Brown howler (Alouatta guariba) and Southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides), as well as the South American Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), to disperse their genetic [...]ver notícia -
Deforestation of Indigenous lands could prevent Brazil from achieving climate change mitigation targets
Publicado em 20 abril 2022Indigenous lands in the Brazilian Amazon are under constant pressure, and deforestation of these areas has accelerated in recent years. Some of them, such as Apyterewa Indigenous Territory in Pará state, are particularly affected, endangering Brazil’s ability to meet the targets to which it is committed internationally in terms of combating deforestation and mitigating the impact of climate change. To protect the areas of the Amazon that are still intact, effective action must be [...]ver notícia -
Researchers discover bacteria capable of killing fungus that causes yield-reducing disease in sugarcane
Publicado em 06 abril 2022A study conducted at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) has discovered that three strains of Pseudomonas bacteria can inhibit growth, and even cause the death, of the fungus responsible for pineapple sett rot, a disease that attacks sugarcane, especially in the planting season. The results are reported in an article published in Environmental Microbiology, a journal of the United Kingdom’s Society for Applied Microbiology, and could serve as a basis for [...]ver notícia -
Link Between Child Poverty and Mental Health Disorders in Adulthood
Publicado em 10 fevereiro 2022A study reported in December in an article in European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry shows an association between child poverty and a heightened propensity to develop externalizing disorders during adolescence and early adulthood, especially among girls. According to psychiatrists, externalizing disorders are characterized by poor impulse control, rule-breaking, aggression, impulsivity, attention deficit and hyperactivity, among other forms of behavior. The [...]ver notícia -
Tapirs and large peccaries are key to ecological balance in Neotropical forests, study shows
Publicado em 26 janeiro 2022Large mammals help keep a balance between areas with different levels of productivity in biomes like the Atlantic Rainforest, and regulate the spatial structure of plant communities. Credit: João Paulo Krajewski A study conducted by researchers affiliated with São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil shows that large mammals have a major impact on plant diversity, primary productivity and biomass in the understory of Neotropical forests. Species like the lowland tapir [...]ver notícia -
Conservation units use unreliable methods to monitor presence of deer, study shows
Publicado em 19 janeiro 2022Methods such as interviews with people who live near conservation units may lead to mistakes, such as distinguishing between deer species on the basis of spots like those on this newborn Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus). Credit: Maurício Christofoletti/UNESP A study of the management plans for 118 conservation units in Brazil shows that 60% use unsuitable methods to detect the presence of deer, and that 38% do not even describe the method used. Conservation of these animals may be [...]ver notícia -
Research Shows Gravitational Action of Sun and Moon Influences Behavior of Plants and Animals
Publicado em 10 janeiro 2022Research conducted at the University of Campinas in Brazil was driven by observations of fluctuations in autoluminescence caused by seed germination in cycles regulated by gravitational tides. The rhythms of activity in all biological organisms, both plants and animals, are closely linked to the gravitational tides created by the orbital mechanics of the Sun-Earth-Moon system. This truth has been somewhat neglected by scientific research but is foregrounded in a study by Cristiano de Mello [...]ver notícia -
Gravitational Action Of Sun And Moon Influences Behavior Of Animals And Plants, Study Shows
Publicado em 05 janeiro 2022The rhythms of activity in all biological organisms, both plants and animals, are closely linked to the gravitational tides created by the orbital mechanics of the Sun-Earth-Moon system. This truth has been somewhat neglected by scientific research but is foregrounded in a study by Cristiano de Mello Gallep at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and Daniel Robert at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. An article on the study is [...]ver notícia -
Factors that determine the success of crowdfunding campaigns
Publicado em 15 dezembro 2021Not just the characteristics of a project, but also the city in which it will be implemented and the diversity of the rewards promised to supporters are the key factors that determine the success of a crowdfunding campaign even before the standard 60-day time limit set by most online entrepreneurial fundraising platforms. A study by researchers at Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in Brazil analyzed more than 4,000 crowdfunding campaigns conducted locally, and for the first time [...]ver notícia
