Thousands of UK deaths per year may be linked to ultra-processed foods – study
Publicado em 28 de abril de 2025
Experts behind the research said they believe there is a relationship between people eating UPFs and an increased risk of early death.
UPFs have been linked previously to poor health, including to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer and early death.
Examples of UPFs include ice cream, processed meats, crisps, mass-produced bread, some breakfast cereals, biscuits and fizzy drinks.
UPFs often contain high levels of saturated fat, salt, sugar and additives, which experts [...]

Ant agriculture started 66 million years ago, study suggests
Publicado em 03 outubro 2024Ant agriculture started 66 million years ago as fungi experienced “a heyday” in the aftermath of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, a new study suggests. Colonies of ants began farming the organisms after the event created ideal conditions for them to thrive, despite causing global mass extinction. Fungi are a group of organisms that include yeasts, mildews, moulds, and mushrooms. Ants have been practicing agriculture and fungus farming for much longer than humans [...]ver notícia -
Wildfires in Canada and the Amazon made more likely by climate change – report
Publicado em 13 agosto 2024Unprecedented fires that raged in Canada and parts of the Amazon were at least three times more likely because of climate change, the first annual assessment of wildfires has shown. The first “state of wildfires” report – which is set to be published annually – assesses extreme wildfires that took place between March 2023 to February 2024, their causes, whether they could be predicted and how the risk of similar events will increase with future [...]ver notícia -
Exercising in short bursts could benefit those who cannot work out regularly
Publicado em 28 junho 2024Short bursts of exercise that last one minute or less could be beneficial for people who struggle to exercise regularly, an expert has said. It is suggested that the intense bouts – described as “exercise snacks” – could be particularly useful for bolstering the health and fitness of those who spend a lot of time sitting, such as obese people or those with chronic diseases. Examples used by Bruno Gualano, an associate professor at the Centre of Lifestyle Medicine [...]ver notícia -
Poor diet linked to 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes globally, study suggests
Publicado em 17 abril 2023Researchers estimate that poor diet contributed to more than 14.1 million cases of type 2 diabetes in 2018. This represents more than 70% of new diagnoses across the world, the study suggests. The analysis, which looked at data from 1990 and 2018, provides insight into which dietary factors are driving the type 2 diabetes burden by world region. The findings are based on a research model of dietary intake in 184 countries, developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition [...]ver notícia -
Scientists study use of abundant enzyme in tumor cells to monitor cancer treatment
Publicado em 12 janeiro 2021The abundant presence of an enzyme known as low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMWPTP) in tumor cells has long been considered an indicator of cancer aggressiveness and metastatic potential. It is also known to perform important functions in cells under normal conditions, participating in both the proliferation process and the regulation of intracellular systems. Research continues on its role in cancer progression. In Brazil, a group of researchers at the University of [...]ver notícia -
‘New evidence’ shows how acute stress can lead to grey hair
Publicado em 23 janeiro 2020Scientists believe they have uncovered “new evidence” that shows how acute stress can cause hair to turn white prematurely. Mice experiments have revealed that extreme levels of stress causes the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s rapid involuntary response to dangerous or stressful situations, to become hyperactive. This, in turn, drives the rapid depletion of stem cells responsible for hair colour, leading to pigment loss and development of [...]ver notícia
