Treatment with injections of Zika virus destroys brain tumors in mice without causing neurological damage
Publicado em 11 janeiro 2022
In a study conducted at the University of S?o Paulo’s Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center (HUG-CELL) in Brazil, serial systemic injections of Zika virus into mice with brain tumors destroyed the cancer without causing neurological damage or injuring other organs, and increased the animals’ survival rate.
The scientists also injected Zika into cerebral organoids, brain-like organs created in vitro using stem cells. The virus not only prevented progression of the tumors but [...]

Slowness of gait can predict risk of frailty in older people
Publicado em 21 dezembro 2021Researchers at the Federal University of Sao Carlos (UFSCar) in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in partnership with colleagues at University College London in the UK have discovered an efficient, simple and inexpensive method of predicting the risk of functional disability in older people. They analyzed data from more than 3,000 over-sixties living in England and found that slowness of gait alone can be considered a predictor of loss of the capacity to perform the basic and instrumental [...]ver notícia -
Study helps understand why obesity increases risk of cardiovascular complications in COVID-19
Publicado em 12 novembro 2021In COVID-19 patients, obesity is the factor most associated with the development of endothelial dysfunction, a condition in which the blood vessels become unable to contract and relax adequately, increasing the risk of events such as heart attacks, thrombosis (blood clotting), and stroke. Endothelium refers to the thin sheet of cells lining the walls of arteries and veins, as well as the inside of the heart. Endothelial cells release substances that control vascular relaxation and contraction, [...]ver notícia -
Change in vaccination strategy averted outbreak of urban yellow fever in São Paulo State
Publicado em 08 novembro 2021Yellow fever is a non-contagious viral disease with two transmission cycles, sylvatic (in wild animals) and urban. Sylvatic yellow fever circulates among monkeys, and in Brazil is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genera Haemagogus and Sabethes, which bite an infected monkey and then infect others. Urban yellow fever circulates among humans and is transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti (human-mosquito-human). Brazil has had no urban yellow fever cases since 1942, but the sylvatic version can [...]ver notícia -
Highly abundant virus in humans could be a biomarker for COVID-19
Publicado em 05 novembro 2021Torquetenovirus (TTV) is without doubt one of the viruses most often discovered in the human organism. It’s also frequent in monkeys and home animals. Its presence has not been related to any identified illness, however its extreme replication is a signal that one thing is improper with the immune system. The correlation between excessive TTV load and immunosuppression has been used in medication in sure contexts, similar to monitoring transplant patients who take remedy to forestall [...]ver notícia -
Study reveals how saline solution can inhibit replication of SARS-CoV-2
Publicado em 21 setembro 2021Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil have shown that a hypertonic saline solution inhibits replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and have elucidated the biochemical mechanism involved. An article reporting the research is published in ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science. The study was performed in the laboratory using human epithelial lung cells infected with the virus., FAPESP Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil have [...]ver notícia -
Novel cell type makes survivors of sepsis more susceptible to infections
Publicado em 01 setembro 2021Sepsis is the leading cause of death in Brazil’s intensive care units (ICUs). Among patients who progress to the severe form of the disease, 40% die, and the survivors often suffer from cardiovascular and neurological complications, as well as a significant decline in immunity lasting for years after they are discharged from hospital., Sepsis is the leading cause of death in Brazil’s intensive care units (ICUs). Among patients who progress to the severe form of the disease, 40% [...]ver notícia -
Pregnant women with COVID-19 face higher risk of pre-eclampsia
Publicado em 25 agosto 2021A review of the scientific literature published by Brazilian researchers shows that pregnant women infected by the novel coronavirus run a higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by persistent high blood pressure, usually in the second half of pregnancy or shortly after delivery. The disorder can cause serious harm to mother and baby. An article with the findings of the review is published in the journal Clinical Science. The authors analyzed a [...]ver notícia -
