Research Shows How a Moderate Dose of Alcohol Protects the Heart
Publicado em 18 de junho de 2018
by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo
For at least 20 years, research has shown that for many people, moderate consumption of alcohol can protect the heart, but the reason for this is poorly understood.
A study conducted at the University of São Paulo's Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) in Brazil suggests that this cardioprotective mechanism may be associated with activation of ALDH2 (aldehyde dehydrogenase-2), a mitochondrial enzyme that helps rid the organism of [...]

Zika Virus Eliminates Advanced Human Tumor in Central Nervous System of Rodents
Publicado em 04 maio 2018A Brazilian study published April 26 in the journal Cancer Research shows for the first time in vivo that Zika virus can be used as a tool to treat aggressive human central nervous system (CNS) tumors. After injecting small amounts of the pathogen into the brains of mice with an advanced stage of the disease, the scientists observed a significant reduction in tumor mass and an increase in survival. In some cases, the tumor was completely eliminated, even where the disease had metastasized to [...]ver notícia -
How Good Bacteria Control Your Genes
Publicado em 11 janeiro 2018Scientists from the Babraham Institute near Cambridge in collaboration with colleagues from Brazil and Italy have discovered a way that good bacteria in the gut can control genes in our cells. The work, published January 9 in Nature Communications, shows that chemical messages from bacteria can change the location of key chemical markers throughout the human genome. By communicating in this way, the bacteria may help to fight infections and to prevent cancer. This work, led by Dr. Patrick [...]ver notícia -
Topical Treatment Strategy for Fighting Skin Cancer Yields Positive Results
Publicado em 10 outubro 2017Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP), in Brazil, are testing a technique in mice that combines low-intensity electric current with a formulation containing nanoencapsulated chemotherapy to treat skin cancer. Applying a low-intensity unidirectional current is one of the ways to ensure that chemical substances penetrate the skin, pushed into the bloodstream through the electric field using a technique known as iontophoresis. According to preliminary results of the study, [...]ver notícia
