Amazon Deforestation Threatens Newly Discovered Fish Species in Brazil
Publicado em 17 maio 2022
Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History researcher Murilo Pastana and his colleagues have discovered and described two new species of Amazonian fish—one with striking red-orange fins and the other so small it is technically considered a miniature fish species—in a paper published today, May 16, in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
Both species inhabit waters located at the bleeding edge of human encroachment into the Amazon rainforest roughly 25 miles [...]

Gravitational action of sun and moon influences behavior of animals and plants - study
Publicado em 06 janeiro 2022Research was driven by observations of fluctuations in autoluminescence caused by seed germination in cycles regulated by gravitational tides. The rhythms of activity in all biological organisms, both plants and animals, are closely linked to the gravitational tides created by the orbital mechanics of the sun-Earth-moon system. This truth has bee n somewhat neglected by scientific research but is foregrounded in a study by Cristiano de Mello Gallep at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in [...]ver notícia -
Transcranial stimulation enhances beneficial effect of aerobic exercise on gait in Parkinson's patients, study finds
Publicado em 07 setembro 2021Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can increase the benefits of aerobic exercise and improve the gait of patients with Parkinson's disease immediately after a session. Step time variability decreases, reaction time shortens, and executive control of gait is enhanced. These were the main findings of a randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled crossover study of 20 volunteers by researchers at São Paulo State University's Institute of Biosciences (IB-UNESP) in Rio [...]ver notícia -
Pregnant women with COVID-19 face higher risk of pre-eclampsia
Publicado em 25 agosto 2021A review of the scientific literature published by Brazilian researchers shows that pregnant women infected by the novel coronavirus run a higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by persistent high blood pressure, usually in the second half of pregnancy or shortly after delivery. The disorder can cause serious harm to mother and baby. An article with the findings of the review is published in the journal Clinical Science. The authors analyzed a [...]ver notícia -
Study: Prevalence of mental illness during the pandemic among those aged 50-80
Publicado em 14 julho 2021The COVID-19 pandemic and the situations of stress and sadness associated with it have not significantly increased the prevalence of depression and anxiety among participants in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brazil) who live in the city of São Paulo. ELSA-Brazil has been monitoring the overall health of 15,000 civil servants at six public universities and research centers in Brazil since 2008. The survey on mental health during the pandemic was conducted in [...]ver notícia -
The incidence of COVID-19 in a Brazilian regional soccer league is one of the highest
Publicado em 10 julho 2021A study conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil shows that the incidence of infections by the novel coronavirus among professional soccer players in São Paulo state during the 2020 season was 11.7%, the same as among health workers in the front line of the response to the pandemic. To arrive at this number, the researchers retrospectively analyzed almost 30,000 RT-PCR tests performed on swabs from 4,269 athletes during eight tournaments of the São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Novel coronavirus infects and replicates in salivary gland cells
Publicado em 07 julho 2021In Brazil, researchers at the University of São Paulo's Medical School (FM-USP) have discovered that SARS-CoV-2 infects and replicates in the salivary glands. Analysis of samples from three types of salivary gland obtained during a minimally invasive autopsy procedure performed on patients who died from complications of COVID-19 at Hospital das Clínicas, FM-USP's hospital complex, showed that tissues specializing in producing and secreting saliva serve as reservoirs for [...]ver notícia -
Lack of exercise while in quarantine had adverse effects on the health of women aged 50-70
Publicado em 01 julho 2021In a study involving 34 women aged 50-70, researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil performed objective measurements of the impact on the subjects' health of the decrease in physical activity observed during the period of social distancing and isolation imposed by COVID-19. Tests conducted after the first 16 weeks of confinement pointed to a deterioration in their overall health, including loss of muscle strength and diminished aerobic capacity, as well as elevated [...]ver notícia -
Alzheimer's disease raises the risk of severe COVID-19 and death from this viral disease
Publicado em 15 junho 2021Neurodegenerative disorders that cause dementia increase the risk of contracting severe COVID-19 and dying from the disease. For people with Alzheimer's the risk is three times greater. It can be six times greater if they are over 80, according to a study conducted in Brazil by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) and Butantan Institute in partnership with colleagues at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). An article on the study, which was supported by [...]ver notícia -
Non-invasive sensor shows correlation between blood pressure and intracranial pressure
Publicado em 09 junho 2021Brazilian researchers have simultaneously demonstrated the mechanism linking high blood pressure to elevated intracranial pressure, validated a non-invasive intracranial pressure monitoring method, and proposed a treatment for high blood pressure that does not affect intracranial hypertension. The study was supported by FAPESP and involved collaboration between researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) and Brain4care, a startup based in São Carlos. It could result in [...]ver notícia
