Poor sleep quality worsens health problems in obese older people, study shows
Publicado em 10 outubro 2023
Obese older people who sleep badly have less muscle strength and mass in their legs and arms, as well as more body fat and more symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who sleep well, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil. An article on the study is published in the journal Scientific Reports.
The number of obese older people has increased worldwide in recent decades. In Brazil, the prevalence of overweight in people aged 60 [...]

Engineered Probiotic Developed to Treat Multiple Sclerosis
Publicado em 09 agosto 2023Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham health care system, have designed a probiotic to suppress autoimmunity in the brain, which occurs when the immune system attacks the cells of the central nervous system. Autoimmunity in the brain is at the core of several diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). In a new study, researchers demonstrated the treatment’s potential using preclinical models of these diseases, finding that [...]ver notícia -
Mutant Salmonella strains cause more severe infections than wild-type bacteria in chickens
Publicado em 11 abril 2023In Brazil, a group of researchers supported by FAPESP created mutant forms of Salmonella to understand the mechanisms that favor colonization of the intestinal tract of chickens by these pathogenic bacteria and find better ways to combat the infection they cause. An article on the study is published in the journal Scientific Reports. In it, the researchers note that, contrary to expectations, the mutant strains caused more severe infections than wild-type bacteria. In the mutant strains, [...]ver notícia -
Infection by Chikungunya produces partial immunity against Mayaro virus
Publicado em 11 dezembro 2021A study conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil suggests people previously infected by Chikungunya virus may develop partial immunity to Mayaro virus. The finding, presented in Journal of Virology, is based on experiments involving mice and blood serum from patients. According to the authors, this type of cross-protection may be one of the reasons for the absence of a major outbreak of Mayaro fever in Brazil. The study was supported by FAPESP. In the experiments, mice [...]ver notícia -
Novel coronavirus infects and replicates in salivary gland cells
Publicado em 07 julho 2021In Brazil, researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Medical School (FM-USP) have discovered that SARS-CoV-2 infects and replicates in the salivary glands. Analysis of samples from three types of salivary gland obtained during a minimally invasive autopsy procedure performed on patients who died from complications of COVID-19 at Hospital das Clínicas, FM-USP’s hospital complex, showed that tissues specializing in producing and secreting saliva serve as reservoirs [...]ver notícia -
Obese girls face heightened risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood
Publicado em 12 maio 2021A study of 92 adolescents conducted in Brazil suggests girls are more likely than boys to develop metabolic alterations associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure and excessive blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides (dyslipidemia). The study was conducted with FAPESP’s support by scientists affiliated with the University of São Paulo’s Biomedical Sciences Institute (ICB-USP) and the Medical School of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Two anti-inflammatory compounds shown to be capable of accelerating recovery from COVID-19
Publicado em 16 novembro 2020Two independent clinical studies—one by researchers at the Center for Cell-Based Therapy (CTC) in Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo (Brazil), on the monoclonal antibody eculizumab, and the other by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (U.S.) on an experimental drug called AMY-101—observed a significant anti-inflammatory effect that contributed to a faster recovery by severe COVID-19 patients. The results of the two studies, which set out to [...]ver notícia -
Substances with anti-cancer action are identified in Brazilian red propolis
Publicado em 10 setembro 2020Brazilian red propolis found in beehives along the coast and mangroves in the Northeast region contains two substances with anti-cancer properties. In laboratory tests, they considerably reduced the proliferation of ovarian, breast, and brain cancer cells. In a study published in the Journal of Natural Products, researchers at the Universities of São Paulo (USP) and Campinas (UNICAMP) report their discovery of the two anti-cancer substances as well as six novel polyphenols with [...]ver notícia -
Leukemia drug shows the potential to treat aggressive pediatric brain cancer
Publicado em 22 julho 2020Researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP-USP) in Brazil have demonstrated the potential of a leukemia drug, arsenic trioxide, to treat medulloblastoma, a type of brain cancer most common in children. When they tested arsenic trioxide on cells taken from one of the most aggressive subgroups of this type of tumor, they obtained promising results in terms of tumor cell death. The drug also made the tumor cells more sensitive [...]ver notícia -
NEGLECTED DISEASES CONTINUE TO REQUIRE ATTENTION DESPITE PROGRESS
Publicado emAlthough neglected diseases account for 11 percent of the global disease burden, they are targeted by only a small proportion of the new drugs developed every year. Between January 2012 and September 2018, a total of 256 new drugs entered the market, but only eight (3.1 percent) were designed to treat neglected diseases. This value exceeds the proportion for 1975-99, which was 1.1 percent, but falls short of the 4.3 percent mark recorded for 2000-11. The term “neglected diseases” refers [...]ver notícia
