Embraer , alongside the Brazilian Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) and the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP) has opened the Engineering Research Center (CPE), a facility dedicated to the Air Mobility for the Future studies, yesterday, 14 March.
The event was held at the ITA campus in Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Attendees included the Governor of the State of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas; the director of the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology, Lieutenant General Maurício Augusto Silveira de Medeiros; the president of FAPESP, Marco Antonio Zago; and the rector of ITA, Professor Anderson Ribeiro Correia.
Luís Carlos Affonso, Embraer’s VP of engineering and technology, said: “It is an immense satisfaction to accompany the beginning of the activities of the Engineering Research Center that brings together great talents in conducting applied research of high value to society.
“We are very excited about the partnership with ITA and other institutions that creates a favourable environment for the search for solutions focused on zero-carbon aviation, autonomous systems, and advanced manufacturing, fundamental to building future air mobility.”
The initiative, announced last year, has encouraged collaboration between people from the scientific community and professionals from the aeronautical industry. Activities are based on three pillars: low-carbon aviation, autonomous systems, and advanced design and manufacturing.
In order to achieve the initiative’s goal of finding innovative technological solutions to enhance sustainability and competitiveness, the CPE relies on a shared investment of BRL48m ($10m) over the next five years. This money will be used for research equipment, research grants, and administrative support.
The CPE will encourage over 100 professionals among professors, research fellows, and experts from the aeronautics industry to collaborate with regards to innovative technological solutions.
Technology transfer between industrial, public, and third-sector players will increase competitiveness of the Brazilian and global innovation ecosystem.
