A new vaccine against dengue protects 80% of those vaccinated, according to a study

A single-dose dengue vaccine produced by the Butantan Institute of the state of São Paulo (Brazil) prevents the development of the disease in the 80 percent of those vaccinatedaccording to an article published in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine'.

Named ‘Butantan–DV‘, the vaccine contains attenuated versions of the four serotypes of the dengue virus. Results from the ongoing phase 3 trial show it is safe and effective for all age groups between 2 and 59 yearsand for people with or without a history of dengue virus infection.

“The publication of the article in the world's leading medical journal attests to the rigor and quality of the work carried out by researchers from 16 Brazilian centers located in the five regions of the country and coordinated by the Butantan Institute,” the infectologist Esper Kallás, first author of the article.

“In June we will complete the five-year follow-up period. Once the data is consolidated, we will know how long the protection induced by the vaccine will last,” he added.
