Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Six Foundations and Universities
$205 million to build the Giant Magellan Telescope, which will enable astronomers to study the chemical evolution of stars and planets. Once construction is completed, the 12-story telescope will be located at Carnegie’s Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.
The six groups that are pooling this donation are the Carnegie Institution for Science, Harvard University, the São Paulo Research Foundation, the University of Arizona, the University of Chicago, and the University of Texas at Austin.
Joe and Clara Wu Tsai Foundation
$50 million to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to name the new theater that will house the New York Philharmonic and support a performance series that features a diverse representation of artists.
The grant for the Wu Tsai Theater was committed at the end of 2020, but only announced publicly this month.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$11 million to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation to continue its Diagnostics Accelerator, which aims to develop new tests for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation
$10 million to the United Way of Greater Cleveland to create a fund that will support health and human services in the metropolitan Cleveland area.
Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust
$3.9 million to NYC Health + Hospitals to establish a new telehealth service for behavioral health within its virtual urgent-care platform, and to test new strategies to deliver behavioral-health care to high-needs patients, including people in New York who are homeless.

Northwestern Mutual Foundation
$2 million to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for its Crazy 8 Initiative, which supports collaboration among scientists who are working in pediatric-cancer research.
Disabled American Veterans
$1.5 million to Joseph House to build a new facility in the Cincinnati area to offer residential and outpatient services for military veterans.
Mellon Foundation
$1 million to Chicago Sinfonietta to expand the orchestra’s free public offerings and expand its community-outreach programs.
Panda Express
$1 million to the Asian American Foundation to support Asian American and Pacific Islander storytellers who are working in the arts, media, and film.

New Grant Opportunity
The American Bar Endowment is accepting proposals for Opportunity Grants, which support law-related research, projects, and programs. Grants will be awarded to projects that enhance access to legal services, promote the rule of law, improve the justice system, and increase the public’s civic engagement and understanding of the legal system. Letters of intent are required before September 23, with full proposals due October 7.
