Many Of The Andes Mountains Have No Snow Cover Due To Long-Term Drought
Publicado em 07 agosto 2021
Areas of South America’s Andes Mountains range are seeing little to no snow cover at a time when snowfall should be at its highest.
Satellite images show that many mountains in the famed range, which runs along the continent’s western edge, have either sparse snow or totally bare ground, Reuters reported.

Study innovates in gluten-free formulations, creating more palatable and nutritious bread
Publicado em 21 julho 2021Gluten is a protein complex found in cereals such as wheat, rye and barley. It is responsible for the elastic texture of dough so that loaves and rolls can be baked into different shapes while remaining flexible and crusty. It also lengthens the shelf life of bread at room temperature, when associated with preservatives. Gluten intolerance, however, has become a global epidemic, and gluten-free products are increasingly popular. The problem is that most of those available on the market are far [...]ver notícia -
Study assesses the prevalence of mental illness during the pandemic among folks aged 50-80
Publicado em 14 julho 2021The COVID-19 pandemic and the situations of stress and sadness associated with it have not significantly increased the prevalence of depression and anxiety among participants in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brazil) who live in the city of São Paulo. ELSA-Brazil has been monitoring the overall health of 15,000 civil servants at six public universities and research centers in Brazil since 2008. The survey on mental health during the pandemic was conducted in [...]ver notícia -
The incidence of COVID-19 in a Brazilian regional soccer league is one of the highest
Publicado em 09 julho 2021A study conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil shows that the incidence of infections by the novel coronavirus among professional soccer players in São Paulo state during the 2020 season was 11.7%, the same as among health workers in the front line of the response to the pandemic. To arrive at this number, the researchers retrospectively analyzed almost 30,000 RT-PCR tests performed on swabs from 4,269 athletes during eight tournaments of the São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Newborns to three months should be stimulated to hold and reach for objects, study says
Publicado em 09 julho 2021Newborn infants and babies aged up to three months should be stimulated to manipulate objects and observe adults performing everyday tasks. This incentive helps their social, motor and cognitive development, researchers note in an article published in the May 2021 issue of the journal Infant Behavior & Development. According to the authors, from the earliest age babies watch adults carrying out activities such as handling utensils and putting them away in drawers or closets. [...]ver notícia -
Novel coronavirus infects and replicates in salivary gland cells
Publicado em 07 julho 2021In Brazil, researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Medical School (FM-USP) have discovered that SARS-CoV-2 infects and replicates in the salivary glands. Analysis of samples from three types of salivary gland obtained during a minimally invasive autopsy procedure performed on patients who died from complications of COVID-19 at Hospital das Clínicas, FM-USP’s hospital complex, showed that tissues specializing in producing and secreting saliva serve as reservoirs [...]ver notícia -
Research paves the way to early diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy
Publicado em 07 julho 2021Research conducted at Cruzeiro do Sul University in São Paulo, Brazil, can contribute to earlier diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy, a disorder characterized by damage to peripheral nerves, with symptoms such as pain and paresthesia (pricking, burning and numbness), mainly in the legs and feet. In the study, a group led by Professor Paulo Barbosa de Freitas Júnior measured grip force in diabetic patients while they were holding and handling objects. The results were [...]ver notícia -
Lack of exercise while in quarantine had adverse effects on the health of women aged 50-70
Publicado em 30 junho 2021In a study involving 34 women aged 50-70, researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil performed objective measurements of the impact on the subjects’ health of the decrease in physical activity observed during the period of social distancing and isolation imposed by COVID-19. Tests conducted after the first 16 weeks of confinement pointed to a deterioration in their overall health, including loss of muscle strength and diminished aerobic capacity, as well as elevated [...]ver notícia -

Publicado em 29 junho 2021The use of transparent masks during communication increases comprehension of speech by about 10% for people with hearing loss and people with normal hearing, according to a study published in the journal Ear and Hearing. The study was conducted at the University of Texas in Dallas (USA), with the participation of Regina Tangerino, a professor at the University of São Paulo’s Bauru Dental School (FOB-USP) in Brazil, and with support from São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Concepts from physics explain importance of quarantine to control spread of COVID-19
Publicado em 23 junho 2021Mathematical models that describe the physical behavior of magnetic materials can also be used to describe the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. This is the conclusion of a study conducted in Brazil by researchers affiliated with São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Rio Claro and Ilha Solteira and reported in an article published in Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications. The study was part of a project led by Mariano de [...]ver notícia
